Advantages of tap water.  Most important, tap water seems to hydrate the body well, in most cases.  It also contains a wide variety of minerals that provide vital trace minerals for the body, in most instances.  It is also inexpensive and convenient.  In the United States, but not in most nations, tap water is not contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasites.  However, in other nations tap water may need to be boiled to kill pathogenic micro-organisms.

Disadvantages of tap water.  These include contamination with metals and toxic chemicals, and the addition of more toxic chemicals used to sanitize the water.  Among the contaminants are small quantities of toxic metals and hundreds of toxic chemicals depending on the location.  Another important contaminant is the residue from dozens of medical pharmaceutical drugs.

Excessive toxic metals.  Many city water supplies, especially wells, contain some excessive amounts toxic metals or toxic amounts or forms of other minerals.  Common toxic metals include arsenic and lead, which are found in many pesticides and herbicides and find their way into the wells and other water supplies.  At times, these are difficult to remove from large amounts of water, so they are just left there even if the water violates environmental standards, especially in poorer nations.

Other minerals that often contaminate drinking water include too much iron, manganese, boron and copper depending on the location.

 Medical drugs in the tap water.  Today, most city water also contains residues of many medical drugs that do not break down fast enough and are recycled in the water supply.  This is a complete horror that has not received nearly the publicity it deserves.  Most medical drugs including many antibiotics, heart medicines, birth control pills, and hundreds of others pass right through the body unaltered.  They do not biodegrade quickly, and are literally recycled in many communities and go back into the drinking water.

Tap water, if unfiltered, often has too many toxic metals and chemicals in it to be good for drinking.  This is variable depending on location.  If tap water is filtered  then it will hydrate the body and can be used for drinking.

Think about it: Does it make sense to debate whether or not fluoride is beneficial for reducing tooth decay when it is being added to a “soup” of known chemicals such as chlorine, trihalomethanes, nitrates, herbicides, fungicides and heavy metals, to name a few? Would you add spice to a soup that you already determined was not edible? This is what our government is doing with our water.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned dental professionals, public health officials and administrators that they should be aware of current total quantities of fluoride that the population is exposed to before adding any additional fluoride program for tooth decay prevention.

There are millions of people being subjected to exorbitant quantities of fluoride that is naturally found in many aquifers and other natural water sources. Many people that consume this water suffer from mild dental fluorosis, including debilitating fluorosis. This serious situation continues to be unpublicized, unrecognized and ignored for many reasons.

The Main Reason is a Political One

The majority of the population is totally unaware of the fact that the fluoride added to the municipal drinking water is by no means clinical grade fluoride. On the contrary, it is in fact:

a toxic waste by-product of the fertilizer and aluminum manufacturing industry, called hydrofloro-silicic acid; and
used in the manufacturing of poison.

Guess what industry contributes the largest donations to the American Dental Association? You guessed it, the aluminum manufacturing industry. Hydrofloro-silicic acid actually causes mottling and brittleness of the teeth in children. Staining and hitting of teeth is caused by clinical dental fluorosis from drinking fluoridated water and in some cases the enamel is actually damaged.

I asked myself that exact question not long ago. I wondered if it was just good marketing, or if the Berkey (I thought they were called Berkley water filters at the time for some reason) water filtration systems really were just leaps and bounds above the other options. Here’s what I came up with…

The thing that makes Berkey water filters superior, in my opinion after doing several hours of research on water filtration methods, is that they combine the oldest, most reliable water filtration techniques with some of the newest, advanced systems.
Most modern water filters force water through a filter at 60-90 PSI. It happens fast. These are the kind that sit on top of, or under, your sink and a filter the water between the pipes and the tap.
Berkeys don’t do that. They let gravity pull the water down through the filtration system, which leaves the water in contact with the filtration media for a long period of time. Think about the bacteria, heavy metals, sediment… in the water and how much more difficult it would be for that stuff to make it through a series of filters if it had no pressure pushing it from behind. It simply settles and sticks in the filter.
Just because we do not see it immediately it does not mean we are not affected by water that is not purified. There are several water purifiers, water softeners and water purification systems that we can choose from. A water purifier can remove all the bacteria without removing chemicals and minerals.
One thing to remember is that the tap water you have is already treated and some of the impurities, bacteria and chemicals are already removed. Because from the treating place to your house water still has a long way to travel through the plumbing system some new bacteria and other impurities from the plumbing system are carried by the water.

Thus even though water was treated and cleaned it can still appear dirty, cloudy and even have an odor. To get rid of all of these or at least most of them you have to use a water purification system in your house. You can select one that is installed in your kitchen, bathroom or both, or you can select a more performing one installed at the main water pipe outside your house. All these systems use different processes to purify water. Different processes let you obtain purified water at different levels
